Applications for the Deerwood Lakes Lions scholarships deadline Dec. 15

The Deerwood Lakes Lions is offering two $500 scholarships to pre-registered students attending college or technical school the spring of 2020. Applicants must be 23 years of age or older and living in Crow Wing or Aitkin county.  
The scholarship recipients are determined by the applicants academic record, community involvement, and need of financial assistance.
The deadline is Dec. 15.

Early Childhood Programs accepting applications

The Crosby Ironton School Readiness/ECFE Program is still accepting registration forms for the Early Childhood programs. It offers a variety of classes for children ages three to five years of age, and has a parent/child class on Friday mornings for children of ages newborn to five years.
It also provides Early Childhood Screenings for all children in the community free of charge. Early Childhood Screening is required for kindergarten entrance.

The early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid growth and learning!
Early childhood screening is a quick and simple check to see how your child is growing and developing. Between the ages of 3 and 4, screening can detect possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get help before they start school.
At your child's screening, a trained professional will check:
—Vision
—Hearing
—Height
—Weight
—Immunization status and review of health history
—Large and small muscles

ECFE Open Gym Monday Nights through January

EFCE is hosting Open Gym Nights on Mondays, Nov. 4, 18 and 25 and again Jan. 13, 20 and 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at CRES. Students age 15 months to pre-K age and their families are welcome.
Come and join in some fun physical activities with your child. Adult(s) must stay and play with child(ren). No pre-registration needed. Just sign-in when you arrive. Come to all or as many as fit into your schedule.

ECFE powerful play session 1

Care is available for older siblings in F-5. Improve your child’s social skills and increase brain growth while interacting with them in a stimulating environment at school. During each class period we will offer a sensory experience, free play, story, music, snack and outside/gym time. Children may attend with mom, dad, grandpa, grandma or any other important adult in their lives. Adults must stay with child for the entire class.   Please call 545-8712 to register. ECFE Wonderful Wednesdays

A free, quick check of a child’s overall development Minnesota law requires it before entering kindergarten or within 90 days of preschool enrollment.
Fifteen sessions will be held on Wednesdays now through Jan. 29 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at CRES.
Parents and children learn together. This class includes parent/child activities, circle time, snack and then parent discussion lead by our parent educator (while children are engaged in structured play). Call Tammy Novak at 545-8712 to register. 

Lunch Buddies Program in need of adults

Kinship is looking for individuals willing to mentor a child twice a month during their lunch hour at Cuyuna Range Elementary School.
These children need positive role models in their lives, and just 45 minutes, twice a month with you, can make that difference.

Nominations open for 2020 Teacher of the Year

Everyone remembers a favorite teacher, someone who motivates and inspires students for a lifetime. Minnesotans have the opportunity again this fall to nominate that unique educator for Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
Nominations open today and can be submitted online through Nov. 15. The 2020 Teacher of the Year will be named at a ceremony May 3, 2020, at the Saint Paul RiverCentre. The Minnesota Teacher of the Year also becomes Minnesota’s candidate for National Teacher of the Year.

Homeless and Wounded Warriors-MN grants scholarships

Homeless and Wounded Warriors-MN, is a Crosslake headquartered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization assisting homeless and needy veterans. Its executive board, meeting on Sunday, May 8, voted to make a $5,000 donation to Central Lakes College veterans assistance program for five $1,000 dollar scholarships to be disbursed one per year over the next five years.
