Deer hunting season is a special time in Minnesota, bringing together friends and families to share in a special and long-held tradition. A half-million Minnesotans are expected to participate in the 2019 firearms season. They will come from all walks of life and leave with memories that last a lifetime.

Deer carcass movement restrictions in place

The DNR reminds hunters who harvest deer in the disease management and control zones in north central and southeast Minnesota that carcass movement restrictions remain in place. Whole deer carcasses cannot be removed from the area until a “not detected” test result is received.
The following parts of deer may leave a CWD management zone before a “not detected” test result is confirmed:
—Quarters or other portions of meat with no part of the spinal column or head attached; the main leg bone can remain in each quarter.

Submit First Deer Photos

Parents/Grandparents are encouraged to submit a photo of their family member with successful deer hunting. Include full name of hunter, age, what town the reside, where they were hunting and who they were hunting with. If you happen to know their choice of gun (or bow), the approximate weight and the point of the deer.
Images of large doe or buck photos are welcome. Include full name, town you reside, where you were hunting, size of the deer (estimated weight and/or points) and your choice of gun or bow (optional).

Woodtick 100

The 3rd Annual grinding of the Woodtick 100 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Registration and kick-off party at Cuyuna Brewing Company on Friday, Sept. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Join fellow cyclists Saturday, Sept. 14 for an 8 a.m. rollout from the Woodtick Inn and from there enjoy some of the finest off-the-grid backcountry gravel Aitkin and Crow Wing Counties have to offer. Register at the Woodtick Inn in Cuyuna from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. All riders must finish their respective ride by 6 p.m.
The Woodtick 100 route is a mix of 30 miles of pavement and 70 miles of gravel.

Tackle football

The tackle football program at CRES offers development of football fundamentals and skills. Practices will include instruction from high school coaches and players. Emphasis will be on learning safe techniques and drills related to tackle football. In- house competitions and scrimmages/games will be held. Volunteer co-coaches are needed.   Contact Bryan Syrstad bsyrstad@ci.k12. mn.us, 545-8832.
Cost is $50 for students in grades 5-6. Sessions will be held on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 to 11 a.m beginning Thursday, Sept. 5.

Coach Galovich State HS Coaches Hall Fame

Dave Galovich is to be inducted into the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The awards banquet is Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Minneapolis Sheraton West.
Social hour will begin at 4:30 p.m., meal at 6 p.m., program at 7:15 p.m.. Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket to attend can can contact Jim Baker at jbad 154yahoo.com.  

Flag football

The flag football program at CRES will develop fundamentals and skills of football. Practices will include instruction from high school coaches and players. Flag football games along with other in-house competitions will be offered. Volunteer Co-Coaches are needed! Contact Bryan Syrstad bsyrstad@ci. k12. mn.us or call 545-8832.
Cost is $35 for students in first through fourth grades. and will be held on Thursdays (3:30 to 5 p.m.) and Saturdays (9 to 11 a.m.) beginning Thursday, Sept. 5 at the CRES football field.

Elementary Volleyball

The elementary volleyball program will begin on Monday, Sept. 9 in the CRES gymnasium at 3:15 p.m. Cost is $40 for students in grades 4-6. Jamie Thiel will coach the event however parent volunteers are needed. Register at www.gocigo.com.

 

Ranger Run

Area youth are invited to participate the 2019 Ranger Run, a youth cross country program for fun and fitness at Cuyuna Range Elementary School’s playground.
The program is open to students from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.  Sessions are Monday evenings at 6 p.m. starting Sept. 9 and continuing through Oct. 7. They will be held rain or shine. Times are recorded for those who want to track their progress and ribbons are awarded following each run.
