Richard "Dick" O. Anderson Obit

RICHARD "DICK" O. ANDERSON, 89 of Edina, passed away on Aug. 27, 2024. Dick was born Nov. 22, 1934, to Alfred “Andy” Theodore and Olga Peterson Anderson in Manistique, MI. Dick graduated valedictorian of his high school in Crosby-Ironton in 1953. He played trombone in the Senior Band from 7th to 12th grade. He attended the University of Minnesota for pre-med from 1953 to 1957 and for medical school until 1960. He completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical School in New York. He had a Medical Internship from 1960 to 1961 and was an Assis- tant Resident in Medicine from 1961 to 1962. He then completed his residency in Psychiatry from 1962 to 1965. Dick’s next step was as a Staff Psychiatrist from 1965 to 1967 at Womack Army Hospital and Mental Hygiene Clinic at Fort Bragg, NC. He then moved to the position of Director and Psychiatrist at Chemung County Medical Clinic in Elmira, NY from 1967 to 1976. He then worked as the Chairman of the Mental Health Department at St. Louis Park Medical Center. He then moved onto being a fulltime staff psychia- trist at Park Nicollet Medical Center (formerly St. Louis Park Medical Center). Then, Dick was with the Health Research and Management Group as Medical Director and staff psychiatrist in Minneapolis from 1986 to 1987 and a staff psychiatrist at HealthPartners from 1987 to 2004. He then moved on to the Associated Clinic of Psychiatry as a staff psychiatrist in Minneapolis from 2005 to 2022. Dick’s specialty in psychiatry was treating anxiety, panic disorders, phobias, and social anxiety disorder. He developed his own approach treating these disorders with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. He assisted patients with finding medications to meet their needs, but his passion was leading group therapy for these disorders. Outside of work and in retirement Dick enjoyed the arts, the Guthrie, Orchestra Hall and playing the trombone, especially playing in the St. Louis Park Community Band. He also enjoyed working in his yard, photography, biking and traveling. He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Mary Anderson, his brother Paul and his parents. He is survived by daughter, Karin (Daniel) Muldowney and their children Shaelyn and Jillian; son Eric (Kathleen) Anderson and their children Jennifer and Katie; daughter Kristin (Steven) Ranum and their children Erin, Nathan, and Matthew; brother Bill and sisters Mary and Margaret; and significant other of 17years Pat Kreuziger. Private interment, Lakewood Cemetery.
