He grew up in Caledonia. After completing 8th grade, he left home for South Dakota and worked on a ranch until 1955 when he voluntarily joined the U.S. Army. He spent two years stationed in Germany, where he worked as a Master Driver in the 606 Ordnance Ammunition Company. Upon returning from the military he began a long career as an over-the-road truck driver. In 1968, he moved his family to Winsted where he worked as a driver for Sterner Industries and as manager of Sterner Garage during his nearly 20 years of service. He also served as the commander of the Lake Mary VFW Post 9232. In 1981, he opened the Bullwacker Bar. After closing the bar, he moved to Emily and began a new career as a heavy equipment operator. As a member of Operating Engineers Local 49, he ran a D8 bulldozer, building roads across the state. After retiring from the 49ers, he and Sindey started Emily Sand and Gravel, which they owned and operated until his final retirement in 2015. He will be remembered for his work hard, play hard mentality. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He loved having a "canuper" at the local watering hole and was known for always having a good story and joke to tell.
