Muriel Adele Hammett Miller Obit

MURIEL ADELE HAMMETT MILLER, 94, passed away in Sequim, WA on May 29, 2020, just weeks before her 95th birthday. She was born in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada on June 23, 1925, the ninth of 11 siblings who traveled to school by horse and buggy or sleigh, depending on the season. Muriel emigrated to the United States after World War II, staying first with relatives in North Dakota and later with her grandparents, Robert and Alice Maghan, who homesteaded on Crooked Lake. She married Albert A. Miller, Jr. in Bessemer, MI in 1947. Together they operated Indian Point Resort on Bay Lake from 1964 until 2014, accruing a large and loyal cliental who appreciated their simple Ma and Pa style of resort. Muriel was definitely a Bay Lake old timer!
Muriel loved poetry and amazed many people with her ability to recite from memory a large and diverse collection of poems that she learned in her schoolroom in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada  and later by reading verse to her children.
She was an accomplished seamstress, making all of her own clothing and much of what her children wore and perfecting items as diverse as wool shirts and women’s underwear. For years, she and Albert gathered sap and cooked maple syrup and although she didn’t necessarily love this job, they were meticulous in their standards of production, selling out their product every season. They were endlessly resourceful, enjoying the bounty of both woods and water. It would be hard to imagine how many pounds of northern pike and crappies the pair of them caught, often weathering the elements in a portable canvas fish house that Albert built.
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Hazel (Maghan) Hammett, Albert A. Miller, Jr., her husband of 67 years, and her oldest son, Donald James (Jim) Miller.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Christine Runquist, her children Virginia/Nancy (Paul) Kubic, Steven (Rosella Wolff) Miller, and Susan (Bob) Meiches, grandchildren Emily (Jeremy) and Chris Kubic, Lindsey Miller, Ben (Bebhinne) and Mollie (Anthony) Meiches, and great grandchildren Juniper Karras Kubic and Adira and Emmett Meiches.
